A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

In this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
