Teenager Discovered Deceased After Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old youth was found dead just days after being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his parent got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was never stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Mental Health Effect
She added that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could use the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a 19-year-old urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they never got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Lead investigator informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to discern his intent."
