Jose Mourinho states he is on the verge of being named Benfica manager after arriving in Lisbon for discussions with the Portuguese club.

Mourinho is set to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked following the midweek Champions League loss at home against the Azerbaijani side.

The 62-year-old has only been out of work for less than a month after being dismissed by Fenerbahce.

"Benfica formally asked me if I was keen. What coach says no to such an opportunity? Certainly not I," he told the media after arriving in Lisbon. "After I was presented with the opportunity to coach them, I jumped at the chance to say that I'm interested, that I'd want to."

Mourinho began his coaching career with Benfica in 2000 but managed only a handful of matches and departed after a dispute with the club chairman.

Mourinho then made his name with FC Porto between 2002-2004, winning six titles - including the UCL in the 2003-2004 season.

After leaving his native country in 2004, Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Inter, Los Blancos, United, Spurs, Roma and Fenerbahce.

The coach left the Turkish club on August 29, two days after they were knocked out from the Champions League play-offs by the Portuguese team.

If they appoint him, he would face Chelsea in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on 30 September.

Benfica also visit Newcastle and host the Spanish giants later in the group stage of the tournament.
